PARK HILL, OKLAHOMA – The winners of the Ninth Annual Cherokee Homecoming Art Show and Sale were recently announced at an awards ceremony Saturday at the Cherokee Heritage Center. Sponsored by Cherokee Casinos and the Oklahoma Arts Council, artists from across the nation competed in various categories for more than $5,000 in cash awards.
The Grand Prize award winner for the Ninth Annual Cherokee Homecoming Art Show is "The Plants Became Allies" by Cherokee artist Martha Berry ![]()
Divisions and categories for the show include: Traditional Division - 1. Traditional Basketry, 2. Jewelry and Beading, 3. Traditional Pottery, 4. Traditional Arts; Contemporary Division – 5. Visual Arts (Painting and Graphics), 6. Contemporary Sculpture, 7. Contemporary Pottery, 8. Contemporary Basketry and 9. Textiles.
First prize was given in each division as well as a Grand Prize award. This year’s Grand Prize winner is Martha Berry for her beaded Bandolier bag "The Plants Became Allies."
Other winners were Contemporary Basketry ; Lena Blackbird , Contemporary Pottery ; Jane Osti , Contemporary Sculpture ; Mary Beth Nelson , Textiles ; Rebecca Wiltshire Whitwell , Traditional Arts ; Roger Cain , Traditional Basketry ; Peggy Sanders Brennan , Traditional Jewelry/Bead; Shirley Sims, Traditional Pottery ; Jaunita Hermanns, Visual Arts ; Dan Horsechief. Judges Choice award winners were Tonia Weavel, Talmadge Davis, Jacqueline Hanna, and Dan Horsechief. Honorary Mention s were awarded to Bessie Russell, Shirley Sims, Charlotee Herr, Lena Blackbrid, Dan Corley, Crystal Hanna, Robert Lewis, P.J. Gilliam Stewart, Roger Cain, Gina Smith, Kenny Henson, and Brooks Henson.
The homecoming show is only open to artists who have membership in the Cherokee Nation, United Keetoowah Band or Eastern Band of Cherokees. This distinction offers visitors the opportunity to purchase traditional Cherokee works.
