TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation can assist tribal citizens with ridding their homes of lead-based paint (LBP)."All houses that were built prior to 1978 and especially those built before 1960 could contain lead hazards," said Don Greenfeather, director of community development for the Cherokee Nation.
To qualify for lead-based paint removal; the family must own and reside in the home that needs lead removed, the home must be located in the Cherokee Nation jurisdictional area, the head or co-head of household must have a Certificate Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) and be a member of a federally recognized tribe, and must meet income requirements.
The applicant will also be required to sign a form stating that they understand all of the work to be performed by Cherokee Nation will only include items for necessary LBP remediation or other materials deemed integrally related to the remediation activities.
Preference will be given to households where the head or co-head of the home is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and to homes with children under the age of six residing in the home.
