TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council approved a $6 million budget for construction of a multi-purpose facility at Sequoyah High School during the May council meeting. The new facility will house an 1800-seat gymnasium, new classrooms and a student center. Plans for the facility have been in the works for the past year, but the budget approval means the Cherokee Nation can move forward on construction.
“If things go according to plan, we could have the new facility ready in 15 months,” said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.
The Council also passed a resolution authorizing Chief Smith to negotiate with the Bureau of Indian Affairs for additional funding for the facility.
In a separate act, the Council voted to put additional money into the Cherokee Nation Johnson O’Malley (JOM) program. The JOM program works with local schools to provide resources to Indian students within the Cherokee Nation’s jurisdiction.
The Council also unanimously passed an act that will allow the Cherokee Heritage Center to access funds the Cherokee Nation had previously budgeted for the Heritage Center’s use.
In other action, the Council passed three resolutions authorizing the Cherokee Nation to apply for environmental grants and a resolution to continue the food distribution program.
