TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - Auditions are being held for the Cherokee Heritage Center’s annual outdoor production of "The Trail of Tears" drama. The drama tells the story of the Cherokee people as they struggle and triumph after forced relocation. All roles are open for casting. Parts are available for a wide age range of actors. All roles will be paid, and most actors will be cast as multiple characters.The auditions will be held Saturday, March 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Shawnee Street Theater on the corner of College and Downing in Tahlequah. Actors are required to prepare a one-minute contemporary monologue and should bring resumes and headshots. If headshots are not available, pictures will be taken at the audition. Callbacks will be held Sunday, March 21, and will be announced at the end of Saturday’s audition.
The "Trail of Tears" drama will run Thursday through Saturday evenings, with a special benefit opening Saturday, June 19. The season will close the weekend of Cherokee National Holiday with a special Sunday performance on September 5.
The drama will be directed by Don Shirey, winner of Critic’s Choice and Director’s Choice at KC/ACTF Region VI for his productions of "Lydie Breeze" and "Night of the Tribades" Shirey is a Theatre Arts instructor at the University of Central Oklahoma.
Playwright Layce Gardner, an Oklahoma native, won great recognition as a playwright and screenwriter in Los Angeles with her play "Tiger Lady", winner of several awards, including those from the LA Critics Association, and the Dramalogue Awards.
