TAHLEQUAH, OK - In true “ga du gi” fashion, the Cherokee Nation Environmental Department found a way to help support professionals fighting the methamphetamine problem in northeastern Oklahoma and help children in need at the same time.

“While planning the regional meth conference and signing up companies who wanted booth space, we realized we could donate the vendor booth fees to children needing a little help,” said Tom Elkins, director of environmental programs for the Cherokee Nation. “A donation to the Cherokee Nation Indian Child Welfare department seemed the best place to make a difference. With the booth fees and an additional donation, we were able to give $1,600 to the child welfare department.”
“We appreciate the donation, it will be used for a special summer activity for our children in tribal custody. This year we are planning to take our custody children to Six Flags as this is an opportunity that most of our children never get to experience,” said Linda Woodward, director of Indian Child Welfare for the Cherokee Nation.
