JAY, OKLAHOMA – Leaders of the Cherokee Nation and residents along Summerfield Hollow Road in Jay, Okla., will be joining together on June 17 to dedicate and celebrate the newly completed road. A ribbon-cutting ceremony with Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith, Delaware County Commissioner Howard Payton, Cherokee Nation employees and other guests will take place at the west end of Summerfield Hollow Road on June 17 at 6 p.m. The dedication celebration will be held at the Delaware Community Center in Jay at 6:30 p.m.

Summerfield Hollow Road is 6.23 miles long and was completed at an estimated construction cost of more than $3.8 million. The road provides direct access from Hwy. 28 to the city of Jay, allowing those that travel the road a safe and more convenient way to schools and work places.

“Before the upgrade on Summerfield Hollow Road it was a single lane road, making it hard for cars to pass one another, causing it to be very unsafe for everyone,” said Michael Lynn, director of roads for Cherokee Nation.

“We want to do our part in providing safe roads for Native American residents, children that ride school buses and also provide a direct route to Cherokee Nation clinics and Head Start centers,” said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. “This road also improves the quality of life for those living along the Summerfield Hollow Road.”

“The road is designed to federal highway standards, the quality of the road is excellent and exceeds normal standards,” said Michael Lynn, director of roads for Cherokee Nation. “Anyone driving on the Summerfield Hollow Road will enjoy a safe drive. They will also enjoy a pleasant view, thanks to the Cherokee Nation Cultural Renewal Program that helped to plant 9,000 pine trees along the road.”

The Summerfield Hollow Road is one of 15 road projects that Cherokee Nation has planned for the 14 county jurisdictional areas. The Cherokee Nation has spent more than $36 million on roads in northeastern Oklahoma over the past 12 years and has another $60 million in progress.
