TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee National Holiday men and women’s slow pitch softball tournament is scheduled for September 3, 4 and 5, as part of the 52nd annual Cherokee National Holiday.

The tournament will be played at the Sequoyah High School softball fields, located four miles south of Tahlequah, Okla., on Highway 62.

“Teams from all over the United States come to this tournament,” said George Roach, slow pitch tournament director. “The tournament has grown every year. Last year, we had teams from across the United States, as well as local teams.”

Teams are allowed up to four players who do not have Certificate Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) cards. The rest of the team must present their CDIB cards at the time of registration. Entry fee is $175 per team. The entry fee deadline is August 20, at 8 p.m. Entry is on a first come, first serve basis. The first teams to pay their entry fees will be entered into the competition. Entries are limited to 24 men’s teams and 24 women’s teams.

The top four teams in both divisions receive team plaques. Players receive jackets for first place, hooded sweatshirts for second place, sweatshirts for third place and t-shirts for fourth place.

A coach’s meeting and team drawing will be held on August 26, at 7 p.m., in the Tribal Council Chambers at the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex for the teams who meet the entry deadline.

The Cherokee National Holiday has been held since 1953 in commemoration of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. It has grown into one of the largest events in Oklahoma, attracting more than 90,000 people from across the world.
