TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation will hold the annual Little Miss and Mister Cherokee contest August 3 and 5.The contest for boys and girls ages 3-4 and 5-7 will be held on Tuesday, August 3 and boys and girls ages 8-10 and 11-13 on Thursday, August 5.
Contestants can begin registering at 5:30 p.m., contest judging begins at 6:00 p.m. Judges will select based on appearance (traditional dress), Cherokee traditions, speech and knowledge of Cherokee culture and history. Contestants will receive a list of questions that could be asked of their respective age group.
“I will be entering two of my daughters in the Little Miss Cherokee Contest this year,” said Shawna Medina, Cherokee tribal citizen. “We are really excited about the contest and the Holiday weekend.”
Judges will choose a winner, as well as first and second runner-ups in each age category; all participants will receive a certificate. The crowning ceremonies take place immediately after the competition and refreshments will be served.
A copy of the child’s Certificate Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) card must accompany the registration form, along with a current photograph and a short biography. Registration forms are available at Cherokee First inside the W. W. Keeler Tribal complex located 3.5 miles south of Tahlequah, Oklahoma on highway 62 or online.
Registration fee for the pageant is $5 and must be paid with cash or money order. Entry forms should be postmarked or hand-delivered no later than 5:00 p.m. on July 28. Send entries to Joyce Bunch, c/o pageant coordinator, P.O. Box 948, Tahlequah, Oklahoma 74465.
