TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The 52nd Cherokee National Holiday activities have expanded to include a traditional Indian food cook-off on Saturday, September 4 on the grounds west of the Cherokee Nation complex, which is located 3.5 miles south of Tahlequah, Okla. on Hwy.62.
“The traditional Indian food cook-off is new this year, bringing more of our Cherokee culture to the Cherokee National Holiday,” said Louie Slagle, director of the Cherokee National Holiday.
The deadline to register for the cook-off is 5 p.m., Friday, August 20. There is no entry fee. Only pre-registrations are being accepted. There will be no on-site registrations the day of the cook-off. The cook-off is limited to ten teams consisting of four team members. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be presented to winning teams.
“We are asking teams to pre-register so we will know how many teams will be competing,” Slagle said.
The cook-off is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., on the grounds west of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex. The winners will be selected at 5 p.m. by a panel of judges selected by the cook-off event committee. Following the judging, the public will be able to purchase a plate of food for $6.00. The food will be sold on a first come, first serve basis; there will not be any carryouts.
The teams will cook a meal based on a menu that the event committee selected. The basic menu will consist of meat (pork), pinto beans, kanuche and fry bread. Teams will be able to select a vegetable dish (potatoes, squash, corn or other) and dumplings (grape, blackberry, strawberry, huckleberry, or other) for dessert. The committee will supply the meat and wood for the teams. Teams will be responsible for supplying the remainder of the meal.
The Cherokee National Holiday has been held since 1953 in commemoration of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. It has grown into one of the largest events in Oklahoma, attracting more than 90,000 people from across the world. People see old friends and make new ones while enjoying the many activities the Holiday offers. This year’s theme, “The Spirit of the Trail,” celebrates the enduring spirit of the Cherokee people, past, present and future.
