TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council unanimously confirmed Callie Catcher as Secretary/Treasurer of the Cherokee Nation during its regular meeting Monday night.

"Callie Catcher has demonstrated she is the best person to serve the Cherokee Nation in this role," said Principal Chief Chad Smith, who nominated Catcher.

"We've got the best Secretary/Treasurer of any Indian tribe," said Jackie Bob Martin, who represents Adair County on the Tribal Council.

"I have every confidence in her as a professional," said Joe Crittenden, who also noted that Catcher grew up in his district, Adair County. "And she comes from the right part of the world." Catcher, a Cherokee Nation citizen, is a CPA who has been the Cherokee Nation's Controller since 2002. Catcher replaces Jay Hannah, who had served as interim Secretary/Treasurer since 2001.

"She is very, very qualified to serve in this capacity," said Meredith Frailey, who represents Mayes County on the Tribal Council.

The Council also unanimously approved resolutions to submit grants to the EPA and U.S. Department of Labor and the submission of a loan application to the USDA and approved a budget modification.

Frailey proposed that legislation amending the Cherokee Nation election laws be tabled to allow for discussion at community meetings. At her suggestion, the legislation was tabled until after those meetings are held in the coming months.

The Council also voted to approve the appointment of Cheryl Cohenour to the Cherokee Nation Environmental Protection Commission. Cohenour, a Cherokee Nation citizen, is the founder, president and general manager of CRC & Associates, a Tulsa-based environmental business with consulting and engineering, laboratory, drilling and construction management functions.

The entire January 12, 2004 Council meeting can be seen on the Cherokee Nation's web site.

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council is scheduled for February 17 at 6:00 p.m. in the Tribal Council Chambers of the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex.
