NOWATA, OKLAHOMA - Cherokee Nation Wauhillau Head Start and Early Head Start classes in Nowata recently earned national recognition for their excellence in teaching young children. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) recently recognized the Cherokee Nation Head Start and Early Head Start classes in Nowata granting them NAEYC accreditation."It is a great honor to receive a recognition of this magnitude", said Verna Thompson, Cherokee Nation Early Childhood Unit director.
NAEYC is the nation’s largest organization of early childhood educators. It administers the largest and most widely recognized accreditation system for all types of early childhood schools and child care centers. NAEYC accreditation is a voluntary process and requires that the early childhood program meet national standards of excellence. A team of national experts from NAEYC determined the Cherokee Nation classrooms to be high-quality early childhood programs, providing a safe and nurturing environment resulting in a national accreditation for this achievement.
"The Wauhillau Early Head Start (EHS) classroom is the first EHS classroom to receive NAEYC recognition", said Diane Woodard, Cherokee Nation program specialist.
Cherokee Nation Head Start classes in Kenwood, Okay, Lowrey, and Jay have also earned NAEYC accreditation.
"Our goal is to have all of our sites receive NAEYC accreditation in the future", Woodard said.
