TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council passed a budget modification and seven resolutions during a brief council meeting Monday night.Principal Chief Chad Smith and Deputy Chief Joe Grayson honored two Cherokee veterans during the meeting, Andy Oosahwee, a decorated World War II vet, and Michael Miley, who is on active duty and between tours in Iraq.
"On behalf of myself, Deputy Chief Joe Grayson, the Tribal Council and the Cherokee Nation, we want to wish all our soldiers a Merry Christmas and we hope they come home safely in the New Year," Smith said.
In other news, the Council confirmed Chief Smith's appointment of Richard R. Stark as a board member of the Cherokee Nation Economic Development Trust Authority and added two new members to the Cherokee Nation Enterprises advisory board.
The Council also unanimously granted easements on tribal land in Kay County, accepted funding for a grant for the Cherokee Nation Justice Department, and authorized Cherokee Nation Human Services Group to submit a funding application for a violence prevention program.
The Council also voted unanimously to move forward with a federal court case to defend the Cherokee Nation's settlement claims for damages to the Cherokee Nation's portion of the Arkansas Riverbed.

The next Cherokee Nation Tribal Council meeting is scheduled for January 10, 2005 at 6 p.m. in the Tribal Council Chambers at the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex on Highway 62 south of Tahlequah.
