WELCH, OKLAHOMA - Residents near Welch look forward to increasing community activities with a new recreation area, thanks to a community work project grant from the Cherokee Nation.

"The new Tsa-La-Gi Park will give our children and community members a safe and secure place to play and enjoy from now on," said Eva Triece, community member. "We also will be able to hold community gatherings such as powwows and other various activities in the new park."

Members of the Welch community formed a non-profit community action group called Punkin Fest Inc. Then the group applied for a community work project grant from the Cherokee Nation.

"Not only did members of Punkin Fest Inc. want to do this project, but our whole community pulled together to get this project going," Triece said. "We have the fire department, churches, and the youth involved with this project."

The Cherokee Nation recently awarded more than $900,000 to a variety of community and faith-based organizations throughout the Cherokee Nation’s 14-county jurisdictional area to be used to improve and strengthen area communities. To apply, organizations must have been willing to donate their time and hard work to complete the project while the Cherokee Nation provided funding for materials. Community work projects vary and include everything from replacing water lines and building walking trails and recreational facilities to replacing roofs on churches.

"These grants allow communities to come one step closer towards building stronger communities," said Rick Gassaway, manager of community works.
