PARK HILL, OKLAHOMA – Every year the Cherokee Heritage Center displays educational exhibits in the Cherokee National Museum. These rotating exhibits are designed to showcase the extensive history and culture of the Cherokee people. Two such exhibits are planned for 2005 and the Museum would like to work with anyone who may have information or objects they are willing to loan to the museum to make these exhibits a success.
The first exhibit, "Cherokee Athletes," will be on display February 1 through April 25, 2005. This winter exhibit will showcase Cherokee sports from the days of stickball games to present day sporting events. Cherokee athletes who have participated in high school, NCAA and professional games will also be featured.
The second exhibit, "State of Sequoyah Convention Centennial," will be on display June 6 through October 2, 2005. This exhibit will show the history of the 1905 meeting in which Oklahoma’s Five Tribes created a constitution to become a separate state. Historical documentation and artifacts explain the constitution’s historical importance and why it never ratified, well as recount the history of Indian Territory prior to Oklahoma statehood.
To submit information and artifacts to either of these exhibits, contact Mickel Yantz, Cherokee Heritage Center curator, phone: 918-456-6007 (ext.23) or send e-mail to exhibits@cherokeeheritage.org. And don't forget to visit the Cherokee Heritage Center online for holiday gift ideas!
