TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation recently held an awards ceremony to honor the hard working teen-agers that participated in a summer youth employment program.

“We look to you to be our future,” Principal Chief Chad Smith told the students. “We look to you to take over the reigns of the Cherokee Nation.”
Students who received outstanding participant awards were: Colby Carpenter of Jay, Stephen Neil Ball of Sallisaw, Lacy Campbell of Claremore and Lashawnda Rolland of Gore. Stephen Neil Ball also received an award for being the over-all outstanding participant. Joshua Ward of Pryor, and Jennie Cox of Grove both received awards for being outstanding students in the basic skills program. The Cherokee Nation also presented plaques to two outstanding interns, Belinda Million and Justin Vann. Both Million and Vann worked as interns at Hastings Indian Medical Center.
Candice Howell, from Langston University, presented the Langston University Awards to instructor Michelle Sixkiller and student Kristen Dixon. The Delaware County Boys and Girls Club and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center received awards for being outstanding job sites for the students to work at. Laurie Shade and Jon Harmon received awards for being outstanding supervisors.
“I want to congratulate all of the youth that were successful in this summer program,” said Buel Anglen, Tribal Council member who represents Tulsa and Washington counties.
The Cherokee Nation Supplemental Youth Employment Program worked with 508 participants during June and July. This eight week program provides an opportunity for youth to earn a paycheck while they learn job skills and gain hands on experience. The Cherokee Nation places the students in jobs in both profit and non-profit organizations throughout the service area of the Cherokee Nation. The students are provided with training in areas that are important in the job market.
