TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Horseshoe Tournament is scheduled Saturday, September 4, as part of the 52nd Cherokee National Holiday.
The tournament will be held west of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex, located 3.5 miles south of Tahlequah, Okla., on Highway 62.
“The tournament consists of men’s, doubles and singles, and women’s, doubles,” said Jody Reese, coordinator of the horseshoe tournament. “Men throw 40 feet and women throw 35 feet.”
Competition begins at 1 p.m. and continues until all contestants have played and prizes have been awarded. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. at the tournament site. Entry fee is $5.
Players receive a windbreaker for first place, a sweatshirt for second place, and a T-shirt for third place.
The Cherokee National Holiday has been held since 1953 in commemoration of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. It has grown into one of the largest events in Oklahoma, attracting more than 90,000 people from across the world.
