TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council unanimously passed several resolutions authorizing environmental and career service grant applications to move forward at its Tribal Council meeting on August 16. Also announced were plans for the Cherokee National Holiday and recognition of a Cherokee World War II veteran.

One resolution called for the Cherokee Nation Environmental Programs Group to submit a grant application to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for clean air monitoring.

“This is a request for $609,000 in funding from Region VI U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,” said Jackie Bob Martin, who represents Adair County on the Tribal Council. “This project will provide support for continuing tribal air-ambient air monitoring stations at four locations in Oklahoma and three in New Mexico.” The motion passed unanimously.

A second environmental resolution, also proposed by Martin and unanimously approved, requested $150,000 from the BIA for a water management plan.

Two resolutions were made for career services projects, including one approving the submission of a grant application to HUD for funding of the ROSS program.

In other actions, the Council unanimously confirmed Robert Jenkins to the board of the Cherokee Nation Tax Commission and Ed Henshaw to the Cherokee Nation Environmental Protection Commission.

During Principal Chief Chad Smith’s monthly report, he invited everyone to attend the Cherokee National Holiday, September 3 through September 5, and he introduced the Miss Cherokee contestants who attended the meeting. Smith also recognized Cherokee World War II veteran Shawnee Stewart for his outstanding service with the U.S. Army Air Force. After 28 missions, Stewart was shot down on the 29th and taken prisoner in Germany. Stewart received a standing ovation from those in attendance.

The next Cherokee Nation Tribal Council meeting is scheduled for September 13 at 6 p.m. in the Tribal Council Chambers at the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex on Highway 62 south of Tahlequah.
