“We were looking for an in-state point guard with knowledge of the game,” said Steve Eck, head basketball coach at Redlands. “He fit the mold. He’s well coached and he comes from a good family. He’ll fit right in.”
HorseChief, of Muskogee, is the son of Debra and Sam HorseChief. He was recently named the Jim Thorpe Male Athlete of the Year and is a four-sport athlete at Sequoyah, participating in basketball, baseball, football and track.
“He’s been a great player,” said Larry Grigg, SHS basketball coach. “His dream is to play Division 1 basketball and I think he’s going to the right place to eventually be able to do that.”
“It’ll help me become a better player,” said HorseChief, who plans on majoring in physical education and becoming a coach. “I like the coaches at Redlands and they’ll make me better.”
“He wants to be a coach and this will help him,” said Sam HorseChief, Solomon’s father.
“I’m excited for him,” said Debra HorseChief, Solomon’s mother. “I like the program and the coaches. I think it will give him a good foundation for college.”
While HorseChief enjoys all four sports, he says that basketball is his favorite. Eck stated that he has had intentions to recruit HorseChief since he was a sophomore. The SHS boys’ basketball team has qualified for the Oklahoma state tournament for three years in a row, winning the championship title in 2003.
