TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation will be celebrating the Week of the Young Child with “The Colors of Spring” at the James Danielson Children’s Village April 19 through April 23.

“This event is a perfect opportunity for us to focus on the needs of young children and families, and to remind us to better meet the needs of all young children and their families,” said Curtiss Hogner, project development coordinator. “This year’s theme is “The Colors of Spring,” and we have lots of activities planned, including the annual parade and artwork which will reflect the theme.”

The purpose of the Week of the Young Child event is to increase public awareness of the needs of young children and their families and to support the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration held each April and is advocated by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation’s largest organization of early childhood professionals with more than 90,000 members.

Cherokee Nation’s “The Colors of Spring” activities include a children’s artwork exhibition, on display in the Tribal Complex all week. The complex is located approximately 3.5 miles south of Tahlequah on Highway 62 south. On Monday, April 19, there will be a parade at 10 a.m., at the James Danielson Children’s Village, next to Sequoyah High School, approximately half a mile south of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex. If inclement weather, the parade will be held the following day.

The Sequoyah High School basketball team will serve as the parade marshals. On Tuesday, April 20, volunteers will provide a snack to parents as they bring their children to school, snacks will be handed out at the stop signs between Head Start and the Child Development Center beginning at 7:30 a.m. Volunteers will also be in the classrooms reading to the children starting at 9 a.m. Students from Northeastern State University and the Cherokee Nation Child Care Occupations class will provide children’s activities on the playground of the James Danielson Children’s Village Circle on Wednesday, April 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Teachers and children will plan indoor classroom activities for Thursday, April 22. Community Helper Day is Friday, April 23. Local agencies such as the Tahlequah Police Department, Tahlequah Fire Department, and Cherokee Nation EMS will be at the James Danielson Children’s Village to educate the students with activities and presentations.

Childcare facilities in the Tahlequah area are invited to attend and participate. For more information about the Week of the Young Child, contact Curtiss Hogner, project development coordinator, phone: 918-458-4393.
