TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee National Historical Society, Inc. will host the 33rd Annual Trail of Tears Art Show and Sale in Tahlequah, Okla. This prestigious show will open at the Cherokee National Museum, on the grounds of the Cherokee Heritage Center, May 1 and will be displayed through June 20.Artists from across America will compete for the $1,500 Grand Prize award and more than $10,000 in total prize money. Artist Troy Anderson is one of the many people entering this year’s show.
“It is a prestigious show,” said Anderson, when asked why he entered. “It is also a chance to meet with artists you don’t get to see very often.”
Categories for this year’s show include Painting, Graphics, Sculpture, Miniatures, Basketry, Pottery, and Trail of Tears Theme. The Trail of Tears Theme category is returning after a two-year hiatus from the show. Artists may submit works in this category in a variety of mediums depicting the removal of a people.
A panel of three distinguished judges will determine the winners. However, patrons will also be allowed to submit their vote for the “People’s Choice” award. This award is based solely on the votes of those attending the show and is highly prized among the artists.
Another popular category is the miniature category, where artwork is not allowed to exceed four inches high by four inches wide. This category allows visitors the opportunity to purchase works by well-known artists they may otherwise be unable to afford.
Although sales will begin with the opening of the show, artwork will not be released until after the June 20 exhibit closing. Winners will be announced during a noon luncheon on opening day. Tickets to the awards luncheon are $25 per person. Participating artists will be admitted free and may bring one guest for a reduced fee of $10. Those wishing to attend the awards luncheon should make reservations by April 27.
Viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
“I hope people come to the show because it is great artwork in a great location,” said Anderson.
The Trail of Tears Art Show is sponsored by Bank of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Arts Council.
