Cherokee Nation Firedancers shake hands with the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council during
the September Tribal Council meeting. The Firedancers were honored by Principal Chief
Chad Smith and NASA for their work in recovering debris in
the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster earlier this year.
TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The newly elected Cherokee Nation Tribal Council held its first meeting Monday night, passing 15 resolutions, a budget amendment and confirming a new Secretary of the Council. Joe Grayson, Jr., chaired the meeting for the first time in his role as Deputy Chief and President of the Tribal Council. "I was very pleased with the first Council meeting", Grayson said after chairing the meeting. "We got off to a good start. Working together, the Cherokee people will be proud of us over the next four years."

Principal Chief Chad Smith honored the Cherokee Nation Firedancers during the meeting, presenting them with an award from NASA and the Columbia Accident Investigation Board for their work in recovering debris from the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster early this year.

The Council passed five grant authorizations on environmental protection issues and four resolutions authorizing continuation of the Women, Infants and Children program. The Council also authorized the lease of tribal land to the Rocky Ford Fire Department and amended the Indian Housing Plan to reflect an additional $250,000 appropriation.

The Council also passed a resolution requiring the executive branch to submit proposed changes to the Cherokee Nation’s election law within 90 days. "Under this resolution, the Council is directing its staff and the administration to submit a proposed revised election law for our consideration", said Meredith Frailey, newly elected Council member from Mayes County.

The Council recessed the meeting and will reconvene after budget hearings to vote on a budget before the end of September, which is also the end of the fiscal year. The next regularly scheduled Tribal Council meeting is set for October 13, at 6:00 p.m., at the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex.
