STILWELL, OKLAHOMA - The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation (HACN) recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for Clearwater Estates , a 30 unit single family housing development in Stilwell.

"The project will be a construction consisting of a 30 unit single family housing development, projected for completion in the fall of 2004", said David Southerland, HACN executive director. Thank you to the City of Stilwell, this is a perfect example of a collaboration of city and tribal governments working together for homeownership."
The Cherokee Affordable Housing, Inc. was established to apply for alternative financing to construct a this 30 unit single family housing development . In November of 2002, the HACN received official notification from the Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency of an allocation of tax credits for the Clearwater Estates Limited Partnership, an entity formed by the HACN.
"These tax credits will allow us to bring $3,297,295 of private monies into this $4.2 million development", Southerland said.
Raven Sue Bruner, Miss Cherokee 2003-04 opened the ceremony with the invocation and a moment of silence in recognition of the United States’ second anniversary of the terrorists attacks of September 11, 2001.
"I am very proud of the work that Cherokee Nation does, helping its’ tribal members", said Reggy Cox, mayor of Stilwell, "The upcoming development will be an excellent addition to our community and I am very proud of it."
"Communities are like people, and they grow or they get stagnant and die", said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. "And so we have the great opportunity with Stilwell to help this community grow, we’ve seen growth not only with this facility provided for our elders, but for this project Clearwater Estates and we are a very proud partner is this development."
"I am extremely glad that this project will be done in the next few months", said Jackie Bob Martin, tribal Council member. "I have two main focuses as councilman and they are education and housing."
"I respect what the Housing Authority does and it is the best Housing Authority in the Nation." said Jim Wilson, State Representative, "With th is project the Housing Authority is creating infrastructure for the community and schools."
"The Housing Authority is committed to provide housing opportunities, this project is a welcome site for Stilwell that will provide both a home and a community atmosphere", said William Smoke, vice-chairman, HACN Board of Commissioners.
According to Southerland, eligible applicants must meet income guidelines.
