TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - Cara Cowan and Susan McNitt, both citizens of the Cherokee Nation, were recently chosen as finalist in The Journal Record’s Woman of The Year contest."This is for women who give back to their community and are successful in business", said Jordana Harrison, administrative assistant at the Journal Record.
"I am very honored to be recognized by the Journal Record", Cowan said. "The list of women and their accomplishments is humbling."
The Journal Record has held this contest annually for 24 years. Nominees can be self-nominated or nominated by someone else. Once nominated, they must complete an application, which is then judged by an anonymous committee. Committee members select 50 women to be highlighted in their annual publication, and then choose a top "Woman of The Year".
"We had about 121 entries this year", Harrison said.
Both Cowan and McNitt have proven to be successful businesswomen and community leaders.
Cowan, of Claremore, is a telecommunications engineer for Wiltel Communications and a Council member of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council.
"A person's work in the community becomes significant only when it endures with or without their presence", Cowan said.
McNitt, of Oklahoma City, is the city auditor for the City of Oklahoma City and is active in various volunteer activities.
"My goal is to become more purpose driven and focus on a small number of opportunities where I can make a difference", McNitt said.
"I’ve known Susan since she was born", said Buel Anglen, a Tribal Council member from Sperry. "To this day, I live next door to her parents. I am proud of her accomplishments as a Cherokee woman."
