SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - The Talking Leaves Job Corps academic team recently won first place in the 16th Annual Dallas Region Academic Olympic competition."The students began studying and preparing for the competition the first of August", said Sueann Freeman, education supervisor for Talking Leaves Job Corps. "They attended a designated class as well as holding study sessions in the evenings and on weekends."
"It was kind of a strain on my social life, but I can handle it", said Joseph Dickey, academic team member.
The students competed in language arts, social studies, science, mathematics, and oratory. Academic team members are Courtney McAlvain, 19, of Tahlequah, Joseph Dickey, 23, of Westville, Kyle Thompson, 21 of Wheeling, Illinois, and Michael Hubbard, 18 of Tulsa.
The three-day competition was held in San Antonio, Texas at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel. Fifteen teams from Job Corps centers in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico competed. Winning team members each received $500 scholarships.
"I’m going to use it ($500) to purchase books and to pay for college", Dickey said.
Dickey plans on attending Northeastern State University in the spring where he will major in biology.
"During the past five years, academic teams from Talking Leaves have brought home two first place, one second place, one third place, and one fourth place trophy", Freeman said. "Students have also won scholarship money in every year."
Two members of the Talking Leaves Native Voices Club, Casey Bigpond and Josh Cook, were invited to represent Talking Leaves with native dance exhibitions at the competition awards banquet.
