TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation Council approved a resolution authorizing Cherokee Nation Enterprises (CNE) to bid in an upcoming auction for a pari-mutuel horse track in Sallisaw, Blue Ribbon Downs."The horse racing industry is important to Oklahoma", said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. "Blue Ribbon Downs has a huge impact on the economy in Sequoyah County and we want to see it succeed. We feel that the expertise CNE has in operating gaming facilities will prove very helpful in making Blue Ribbon Downs a success."
"We want to participate in the auction in November", said David Stewart, president and CEO of CNE. "We want to be able to purchase the track if it is available at a price that makes good business sense. It would be a complimentary property to our existing operations."
In other action, the Council passed a resolution allowing the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service to submit a grant to the United States Department of Justice and passed three amendments to the Cherokee Nation’s criminal code.
The Council also confirmed six of Chief Smith’s nominees to various boards and commissions. The Council approved Wanda Elliot and Jack Baker as members of the Cherokee Nation Registration Committee, as well as Lela Ummerteskee as Registrar.
The Council confirmed Scott Gregory as a member of the Cherokee Nation Tax Commission and Robert McSpadden and Robert Huffman as members of CNE’s board of directors.
During his State of the Nation Address, Principal Chief Chad Smith shared honored Amicia Craig, a young Cherokee who saved a two-year old friend from drowning, and a group of nine volunteers who are working for seven weeks at the Cherokee Heritage Center.

The Council recessed until Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., when it will reconvene to discuss a budget modification for the Cherokee Heritage Center.
The next regular scheduled Council meeting is set for November 10, at 6 p.m., in the Tribal Council Chambers at the W.W. Keeler Complex.
