CLAREMORE, OKLAHOMA - More than 60 Rogers County Cherokees attended a community meeting hosted by new District 7 (Rogers County) Tribal Councilwoman Cara Cowan. It was the first public community meeting held in Rogers County by a Council representative since districts were created for council representation.Cowan presented information on finding and applying for scholarship resources. The group also discussed how often they wanted to meet, the topics they wanted covered and what issues they felt were priorities.
Cowan also provided her constituents a survey to complete and return with comments on how often and when they would like to meet and what topics they would like addressed.
Joining Cowan as special guests were Deputy Chief Joe Grayson and Tribal Council members Buel Anglen and Bill Johnson, who represent District 8 (Tulsa and Washington counties). They discussed upcoming legislation and the 2003-2004 Cherokee Nation budget and answered questions from the audience.
Tribal citizen Pamela Hudson-Bickford presented on the importance of TERO training she recently attended in Tahlequah. TERO (Tribal Rights Employment Office) certifies Indian owned businesses and encourages employment of Native Americans in business.
The Claremore Senior Center hosted the event and Sharon McDonald prepared refreshments.
