ROCKY FORD, OKLAHOMA - Residents of the Rocky Ford community recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for their new community building."Were looking forward to it (the new building)", said Randall Cummings, president of the Rocky Ford Community Resident Organization. "We’ve got a lot of plans for it."
The Rocky Ford community plans to use the new building to hold educational classes, after-school tutoring, cultural activities, gospel singing, and recreational activities.
"The Cherokee Nation has helped this community considerably", Cummings said. "We’re really grateful."
The Cherokee Nation is providing the new 3,750 square foot building as part of a community self-help program. The Cherokee Nation will provide the materials and some site work, but volunteers must do all of the construction.
"Were just loaded with family and friends in the community who are willing to donate their time to construct the metal building", Cummings said.
The Rocky Ford community had previously used an old school building as a community building, but vandals set fire to it two years ago.
"We’d have gospel singings and meetings in there, but it got burglarized, vandalized, and they set fire to the building and that put a stop to it."
The new community building is expected to be operational by the end of December.
