BRIGGS, OKLAHOMA - Briggs 3 and 4-year-old preschool students ' have been learning about safety during October.

"Children were visited by the Oklahoma Highway Parole, Trooper Mike Sherman and his friends Darren the DARE Bear and Hero, as well as, Allen and Smokey the Bear, Jess French and Yvonne Johnson from the Cherokee Nation EMS", said Jean Smith, Briggs preschool coordinator.
"There are 3 main areas of concern that we try to cover, seat belt safety, stranger awareness and fire protection", said Jess French, Cherokee Nation EMS instructor. "The first is seat belt safety. Trooper Sherman and I try and stress how very important it is to wear our seatbelts and sit in our car restraints."
"The next concern is Halloween, a time when children must learn about stranger awareness and that an adult must check their candy before they eat it up", said Yvonne Johnson, Cherokee Nation EMS instructor.
The children also learned about fire safety. Children and their parents were treated to a trip to the Briggs Fire Department where fire Chief Mr. Nick Purkey presented a short workshop to the parents about fire prevention and how to stay safe.
"We try and to go out and educate all grades, with CPR for the upper grades, and safety awareness for the lower grades, as well as church groups and other organizations", French said.
