TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation is now accepting applications for enrollment in Head Start and Early Head Start programs for the 2003-04 school for children 0-5 years old.

"Head Start and Early Head Start are comprehensive development programs", said Norma Harvey, public education coordinator for the Cherokee Nation.

The Cherokee Nation Head Start and Early Head Start programs implement American Indian heritage, Cherokee culture and language, and provide services in the areas of education, physical fitness, medical and dental health, nutrition and social development with a special emphasis for children with special needs including significant disabilities. Children with special needs are encouraged to apply, despite the significance of their disability.

Parents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. If a center is full, the child will be placed on a waiting list and contacted once an opening is available. Applications will be accepted for children who will be two, three, or four by Sept. 1, 2003.
