TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation will host "Stand For Children Day", June 6 at the Cherokee Capitol Square in downtown Tahlequah from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. At 10:00 a.m., Tahlequah Mayor Jerry Cook will sign a proclamation declaring June 6 "Stand For Children Day"."It's a day designed to get the community together to rally for children’s educational, safety, and health needs", said Kim Phillips, who works with Cherokee Nation’s Child Care Resource Center.
Different activities are planned which will include a demonstration by the fire department on the ''stop, drop and roll''procedure, Cherokee Nation Emergency Medical Service will have an ambulance available for viewing, Ann Cherry with OSU Extension will emphasize the importance of healthy eating with samples of nutritional snacks, and Cherokee County 911 will be on-hand to teach the children about the life-saving number.
The "Caring Van" will also be available for children needing immunizations. A parent or guardian must sign a release form and have a current immunization record with them before their child can be immunized.
There will be balloons, cotton candy, sno-cones and popcorn for the children. All the scheduled activities are free and open to the public.
"It's going to be a fun-filled day with a variety of community agencies represented and we hope all children, families and child care providers can attend", Phillips said.
In case of inclement weather, Stand For Children will be at the Tahlequah Community Building. For more information, please call the Cherokee Nation Child Care Resource Center, phone: 888-458-6230.
