TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - Cherokee voters re-elected Principal Chief Chad Smith, elected 14 Council members and passed a constitutional amendment during the May 24 general election.

Smith received 7281 votes, or 52% of the vote, beating three challengers.

The race for Deputy Chief will be decided in a run-off between Joe Grayson, Jr. and Gary Chapman. Grayson received 5193 votes, 38% of the total cast. Chapman finished second with 4531 votes, or 33%.

The only Council race to have a run-off occurred in District 4 (Three Rivers), which is made up of parts of Muskogee, McIntosh and Wagoner counties. Don Garvin received 624 votes, for 48% and Calvin Rock finished with 529 votes for 41%.

The Deputy Chief and District Four Council races will be decided in a run-off on July 26. The Cherokee people will also have an opportunity to vote on a new constitution at that time.

The following Council seats were decided at the polls on May 24:

District One - Cherokee District (Cherokee County - 2 Seats):

Bill John Baker, 820 votes, and Audra Smoke-Conner, 799 votes, defeated 12 other candidates.

District Two - Trail of Tears District (Adair County - 2 Seats)

Jackie Bob Martin, 682 votes, and S. Joe Crittenden, 433, defeated eight other candidates.

District Three - Sequoyah District (Sequoyah County - 2 Seats)

Phyllis Yargee, 576 votes, and David Thornton, 573 votes, defeated three other candidates.

District Five - Delaware District (Delaware and part of Ottawa Counties - 2 Seats)

Linda Hughes O’Leary, 573 votes and Melvina Shotpouch, 563 votes, defeated three other candidates.

District Six - Mayes District (Mayes County - 2 Seats)

Meredith Frailey, 352 votes, and Johnny Keener, 341 votes, defeated four other candidates.

District Seven - Will Rogers District (Rogers County - 1 Seat)

Cara Cowan 614 votes, won 66% of the vote and defeated one other candidate.

District Eight - Oolagah District (Washington County & part of Tulsa County- 2 Seats)

Buel Anglen, 985 votes, and William G. "Bill" Johnson, 707 votes, defeated two other candidates.

District Nine - Craig District (Nowata and Craig counties - 1 Seat)

Charles "Chuck" Hoskin, 524 votes, won 57% of the vote and defeated one other candidate.

The constitutional amendment, which passed by a vote of 6996 to 4218 (62% to 38%), removes the federal approval requirement from the Cherokee Nation Constitution.
