TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation will host a summer youth fitness camp for Cherokee children in 4th to 6th grades in June."This is the thirteenth year that Healthy Nation has offered the Summer Youth Fitness Camps", said Margie Burkhart, a health educator in Cherokee Nation’s Healthy Nation program. "The camps this year will focus on diabetes prevention through exercise and healthy lifestyles."
The camp begins June 2 and lasts through June 6. The schedule for the day camp is 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and will be held in the Tsa-La-Gi community room at the W. W. Keeler Tribal Complex south of Tahlequah.
"Summer youth fitness camps offer area youth organized activities, direction and fun", Burkhart said. “The youngsters will participate in physical activity and listen to health information."
Some of the physical activities offered are stickball, kickboxing, aerobics, arts and crafts, educational classes and field trips.
"In addition to learning opportunities, camp teaches children the benefits of community, inspires independence, and promotes self-confidence", Burkhart said.
