TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council voted to send the Cherokee Heritage Center $300,000 and passed three other amendments to the current fiscal year budget during Monday night’s meeting."Compare with all the money we spend on other programs, we really don’t spend enough on the Heritage Center", said Barbara Starr-Scott, Cherokee Nation Tribal Council member from Jay.
The Council also legislated a $400,000 matching grant in the next fiscal year from Cherokee Nation Enterprises. The grant would match funds the Heritage Center is able to raise from other sources.
The Council also passed two standard budget amendments and a separate amendment appropriating more than $700,000 for the Housing Improvement Program (HIP), which is operated by the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation.
In other news, the Council passed four resolutions relating to the Cherokee Nation’s land in Kay County, as well as a resolution supporting the recruitment and education of Cherokee language teachers.
The next Cherokee Nation Tribal Council Meeting is set for June 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex in Tahlequah.
