Tahlequah, Oklahoma - Pottery has always been an important part of Cherokee heritage, and much of it has been found at sites investigated in the old Cherokee Nation. Much like today, the ancient Cherokee people needed vessels to carry things. As a result they began making clay pottery to fulfill that need. Thanks to different techniques and styles, pottery is viewed today as an art form rather than a merely a utilitarian vessel. The Cherokee Heritage Center presents a program in conjunction with Cherokee Heritage Arts called "Summer Showcase." Every Saturday from May 10 to August 23, visitors to the center are able to meet and buy directly from the artist and see how each piece is made through demonstrations.
On Saturday, May 10, featured artist Jane Osti will be presenting pottery from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cherokee Heritage Center. Osti is a well-known Cherokee potter from Oklahoma. She has won many awards for her traditional and contemporary pottery, and her work can be found both in the U.S. and overseas.
