TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation is now accepting applications for the Harold ''Jiggs'' Phillips Memorial Scholarship.The scholarship was established in honor of Phillips, an educator and member of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council for 18 years, by his widow Virginia Phillips and their three children. As a retired teacher, Phillips believed in a better life for Cherokee youth by promoting higher education through his advocacy in several Cherokee Nation scholarship initiatives. His family shares his dream and wishes to honor him with a special scholarship in his memory.
"Jiggs always believed in Cherokee students", said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. "He knew Cherokees can excel academically and this scholarship will carry on his legacy."
The scholarship contest is open to graduating seniors in Adair County schools. Applicants must be a Cherokee Nation tribal member and maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. One scholarship will be awarded for one school year in the amount of $1500, $750 per semester. Student must continue to maintain a 2.0 grade point average on college level course work to receive the scholarship for the second semester. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is April 17.
