TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council passed a resolution establishing a scholarship in honor of late Tribal Council member Harold 'Jiggs' Phillips during the March Council meeting.

Principal Chief Chad Smith offered praise and comfort to Phillips’ family, who were present at the meeting.

"We know he was precious in your heart", Smith told Phillips’ family. "I hope that by our actions here tonight you will know that he was precious to us too."

After the resolution passed unanimously, Council members and the audience gave the Phillips family a standing ovation.

Phillips served on the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council for 18 years and was a respected statesman and educator. The scholarship will be given each year to a student graduating from an Adair County high school. Phillips represented Adair County on the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council.

In other items of business, the Council voted to give an additional $50,000 to the Cherokee Heritage Center and passed several environmental and community service resolutions.

The Council also voted to spend tribal tag revenues on road projects in the future, adding to the Cherokee Nation’s current commitment of more than $25 million to roads.
