UPDATE: Sequoyah High School beat Oklahoma City Millwood to advance to the state finals for the first time in school history. Please check the Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma's web site for an update on how SHS does in the championship game. The following story was published before the playoffs began, and gives more details on the team and their season:

TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Sequoyah High School basketball team is heading to the "Big House". For the second year in a row, the SHS boy’s team is going the state basketball tournament with hopes of bringing home the most sought after trophy in all of high school basketball, a state championship.
SHS is currently ranked third in the state among 3A schools and ended the year with a winning season of 21 wins and 2 losses.
"We’re doing the same routine in practice, just with a little more intensity", said Tucson Griggs, member of the SHS basketball team. "We have a good chance to win it all this year.}
SHS will play their first game in the state tournament Thursday, March 13 at 3:30 p.m. at the Choctaw High School gym in Choctaw, Oklahoma. A win will advance them to the next round of play-offs on Friday, March 14 at 11:30 at the State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City. A win on Friday will put them in the final game on Saturday, March 15 at 12:00 also at the State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City. Sequoyah High School will be taking buses of fans to the games. Sequoyah High School, an Indian boarding school, originated in 1871, when the Cherokee National Council passed an act setting up an orphan asylum to take care of many orphans that came out of the Civil War. Sequoyah High School's approximate 300 enrollment represents 42 tribes and 14 different states. Students are eligible to attend if they are members of federally recognized Indian tribes or one-fourth blood descendants of such members. |
