Tahlequah, Oklahoma - On March 29 and 30, the Cherokee Heritage Center will offer a genealogy conference. The conference is subtitled "Civil War and the Cherokee Nation" and will explore methods of using Civil War records to find more information about your ancestor.

We often think of the Civil War as being something played out on the battlefields of the Old South. It was an event, which also held major consequences for the inhabitants of Indian Territory.

This conference will be held at Northeastern State University's Net Building and will teach participants how to get one more piece of their genealogical puzzle together. Cost for the two-day event is $40 for the general public. Members of the Cherokee National Historical Society may attend for $35.

Flat Reed Basket Making Class

On Saturday, March 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Cherokee Heritage Center will present a Flat Reed Basket Making Class at the Cherokee Heritage Center. The Flat Reed Basket Making will be the first in the 2003 series of Traditional Art Classes.

Participants will learn how to make a flat reed basket, the history of basket making, and gathering and preparing materials. Pauline Hampton will teach the class. The fee is $30 and includes all materials.
