TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The highest court in the Cherokee Nation has dismissed litigation relating to the Principal Chief and Deputy Chief races in the May 24 Cherokee Nation Election, Principal Chief Chad Smith told the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council Monday night.

The Judicial Appeals Tribunal (JAT) ordered the Cherokee Nation Election Commission to certify Smith’s re-election after dismissing the case. Other litigation continues in contested Council races in District 1, District 3 and District 6. Hearings resumed Tuesday, June 17 at the Cherokee Nation courthouse in downtown Tahlequah.

In regular Council news, the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council voted to pass seven resolutions and tabled one resolution during the Council meeting on Monday night.

The Council passed resolutions to seek additional funding for community buildings, lead outreach and a demonstration project from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The Council also unanimously passed a resolution authorizing a grant application for the John A. Ketcher Youth Shelter in Tahlequah and an EPA grant.

The Council tabled a resolution authorizing the submission of an application for funding for the Cherokee Nation’s Food Distribution program from the United States Department of Agriculture.

The next Cherokee Nation Tribal Council meeting is scheduled for July 14, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. in the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
