GREASY, OKLAHOMA - Greasy schools purchase a new gymnasium floor and built a fitness center with the help from a $68,000 grant from the Cherokee Nation.

"This grant is a real good opportunity for our students to get more involved in physical fitness activities", said Ronnie Denny, superintendent for Greasy schools.

Greasy schools used their money to purchase a new floor for their middle school gymnasium and to add on a fitness center for both the students as well as the community.

"I am very proud of what has been done here at Greasy schools with the help of the Cherokee Nation", said Jackie Bob Martin, Cherokee Tribal council member. "This is a great benefit for the community."

"Diabetes is devastating many Cherokee communities", said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. "We want to promote a healthy lifestyle in those communities, for kids and adults. This new facility gives folks in Greasy a place to exercise, which is a key factor in preventing and controlling diabetes."

The Cherokee Nation selected Greasy School as one of seventeen schools to share in a $1 million Diabetes Prevention Grant. Schools that applied for the Cherokee Nation Diabetes Prevention Grant had to submit a plan for improving their existing physical activity program or starting a new one.

"The Cherokee Nation has always been a strong supporter of rural schools", said Larry Adair, Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives. "This is how you get things done---work with tribes such as the Cherokee Nation to keep rural schools alive."

The Cherokee Nation distributed the grant as a form of diabetes prevention among Native American people. Schools with a high number of Native American students were given top priority in the selection process.

The fitness center is free and open to the public. To find out more on the hours of the fitness center, please contact Greasy school, phone: 918-696-7768.
