"This is the best thing that could happen to someone who wants to go to school", said Kathy Sierrra, Junior’s mother.
"I had been praying to get the money to go to college", Junior Sierra said. "It’s just a blessing. Some history books are wrong and I want to make it right. I want to try to give something back to the people. Even though I want to help other Native American tribes, my main focus will be the Cherokee tribe because my ultimate goal is to become the chief of the Cherokee Nation one day."
Sierra, a Cherokee Nation tribal member, plans on attending Northeastern State University where he will major in both criminal justice and Native American studies. He plans on using his education to become a Cherokee historian and help people to know the truth about the Cherokee people.
The scholarship will pay for Sierra’s undergraduate and graduate education. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awards the Gates Millennium Scholarship every year to 1000 college freshman around the country. This scholarship fund was established in 1999 to provide an education for outstanding African American, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic American students. Students may use the scholarship to pay for books, tuition, and fees at major universities around the county.
