TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation is now accepting entries for the Cherokee National Holiday Quilt Contest and Show. Entries will be accepted until Thursday, August 15. Quilts will be on display in the Cherokee County Community Building in Tahlequah between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2003.
"The quilt show and contest has grown larger over the years", said Barbara Buckner, coordinator of the Cherokee National Holiday quilt show. "Last year, we had entries from Texas, New Mexico, Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas."
Quilt show visitors may vote on their favorite quilts. Votes will be counted at 4 p.m. and winners will be announced shortly thereafter. Winners and honorable mentions will receive ribbons. All quilts must be picked up by 5 p.m. that evening.
This year’s Cherokee National Holiday begins August 29 and runs through August 31. The theme for this year’s celebration is 'Cherokee Communities: the Strength of our Nation'. The annual Holiday commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the Cherokee Nation Constitution in 1839. To reserve a space for the quilt show, call Barbara Buckner by August 15, phone: 918-458-4452 (work) or 918-453-0233 (home).
