TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation will hold the annual Little Miss and Mister Cherokee contest August 5 and 7 as part of the 51st Cherokee National Holiday.The contest for boys and girls ages 4-5 and 6-7 will be held on Tuesday, August 5 and boys and girls ages 8-9 and 10-12 on Thursday, August 7. Registration will take place at 5:30 p.m. and judging will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. Contestants will be judged on Cherokee attire, Cherokee history, traditions, and knowledge, and poise and personality.
A male and female winner and first and second runner up are chosen in each age category. The crowning ceremonies take place immediately after the competition and refreshments will be served. The judges’ decisions will be final.
A copy of the child’s Certificate Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) card must accompany the registration form. Parents CDIB card will not be accepted. Contestants must submit a copy of their latest report card or transcript and a current photograph. Registration forms are available at the W. W. Keeler Tribal complex located 3 ½ miles south of Tahlequah, Oklahoma on Highway 62.
Registration fee for the pageant is $5 and personal checks will not be accepted. Entry forms must be completed and postmarked or hand-delivered no later than July 25 by 5:00 p.m. Send to Barbara Williams, c/o Pageant Coordinator, P.O. Box 948, Tahlequah, Oklahoma 74465.
The contest is held in the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex Tribal Council Chambers.
This year’s Cherokee National Holiday begins August 29 and runs through August 31. The theme for this year’s celebration is "Cherokee Communities: the Strength of our Nation". The annual Holiday commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the Cherokee Nation Constitution in 1839.
