TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The 51st Cherokee National Holiday will host a free blues-rock concert on Sunday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m. Award winning Vic Gutierrez of the Smilin’ Vic & The Soul Monkey's are the featured artists.
"We’re excited about having the Smilin’ Vic band with us during the Holiday", said Paulette Thomas, coordinator of the Holiday concert. "Vic Gutierrez not only has a charismatic stage presence but he is also blessed with a beautiful voice." The concert will be held west of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex located 3 1/2 miles south of Tahlequah, Okla. on Highway 62.
Vic Gutierrez was the lead singer when the band won the local Oklahoma City blues talent competition sponsored by the Oklahoma Blues Society. The following year the band placed first in the International Blues Talent competition held in Memphis, Tennessee. A part of the award package was to perform on the Ultimate Rhythm and Blues cruise, which left from Jamaica, where the band had the honor of playing along such greats as Etta James, Taj Mahal, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Joe Louis Walker, Charles Brown and Jimmy Thackery.
Organizers expect more than 100,000 people to attend the 51st Cherokee National Holiday Labor Day weekend in Tahlequah. The theme for this year’s Holiday is "Cherokee Communities: the Strength of our Nation".
The Cherokee National Holiday marks the anniversary of the signing of the Cherokee Nation Constitution in 1839, soon after the Cherokees’ forced removal to Indian Territory from their homelands in the southeastern United States.
