Tahlequah, Oklahoma - This month, Cherokee Heritage Center Clemente students will host a series of meetings to discuss the current state of tribal education in the Cherokee Nation. The meetings will be held in several Cherokee communities including Park Hill at the Cherokee Heritage Center at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 13, in the Bell community at Bell Public School on Tuesday, January 21 at 6:30 p.m. and in the Lowery/Moody communities at Lowery Public School at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28."We want to get input from the Cherokee people on what they would like to see in the future concerning tribal education," stated Dawni Swayney, Clemente Course Coordinator for the Cherokee Heritage Center. Another topic the meeting will address includes retention rates for high school and college students and brainstorm solutions for the future.
The Cherokee Clemente course has been offered in three different sections at the Cherokee Heritage Center. The Clemente course is a Cherokee Humanities course that teaches about Cherokee art, history, language and culture. The next Clemente course is scheduled for fall 2003.
