TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma - 150 students graduated from Cherokee Nation’s Talking Leaves Job Corps on February 20 in the Talking Leaves Gymnasium. Several speakers encouraged the students and acknowledged their accomplishments. Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith congratulated the graduates and asked for a round of applause for the families of those graduating."They couldn’t have done it without the support of family and friends", Smith said.
Brenda Reneau Wynn, Oklahoma Labor Commissioner, was the guest speaker for the ceremony. She stressed the importance of believing in your dream and never giving up on that dream.
"The ceremony is about the students and their accomplishments", Wynn said. "It was a humbling experience to be able to speak to these graduates because I came from an alternative education background myself. I was told that I couldn’t make it and I did."
Dustin Cooper of Ada, Okla. and Nina Sutter of Pryor, Okla. received the Outstanding Graduate Awards. Kiki Fornero of Oklahoma City, Okla. received the Outstanding GED Award, given to the student who scores the highest on the state GED test.
Talking Leaves Job Corps offers students the opportunity to earn a certificate in one of the following fields: Business Office Technology, Health Occupations, Electrical Wiring, Culinary Arts, Facilities Maintenance, and Materials Handling. Students may also earn their GED while enrolled if they enter the program without a high school diploma. Talking Leaves also provides on-campus housing for students.
