TULSA, OKLAHOMA - In a unique partnership, the League of Women’s Voters will assist the Cherokee Nation in registering voters later this week for May’s tribal elections. The Tulsa chapter of the League of Women’s Voters has never before worked with an Indian Nation to register voters for tribal elections.
"To my knowledge, we never have", said Deborah Taggert, director of the Tulsa chapter of the League of Women’s Voters.
"The League works to provide non-partisan information to people, and to try to get them registered so they do have a voice", said Carmen Rossiter, vice-president of the Tulsa chapter of the League of Women’s Voters.
The League of Women’s Voters will register voters at two separate times and locations. On Thursday, Feb. 27, from 1-4 p.m., volunteers will register Cherokee voters at the Indian Health Care Resource Center, located at 550 S. Peoria. On Saturday, March 1, between 2 and 6 p.m., Cherokee citizens can register at Borders Bookstore at 2740 E. 21st.
Cherokee Nation citizens will need their tribal membership ("blue") card or their enrollment number. To register on-line, visit the Cherokee Nation Election Commission web site.
