TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation has received an award for excellent supervising on a recently completed road in Delaware County. The Cherokee Nation has spent more than $6,000,000 on roads in the Delaware county area over the past ten years and has plans to spend another $21,000,000 on Delaware county roads in the next five years. This commitment to excellent roads has not gone unnoticed. The Cherokee Nation received the award from the Oklahoma Asphalt Pavement Association for Superior Engineering Supervision on the asphalt reconstruction of the Fairview Eucha Road located south of Lake Eucha.

"We are happy with this award", said Harley Buzzard, director of the Cherokee Nation roads division. "It is the first time that we (the Cherokee Nation) have received it."
The Fairview Eucha road is 3.7 miles in length with a 302’ bridge spanning over Spavinaw Creek. This route now connects the communities of Kenwood, Eucha, Jay, and Salina and will provide those residents with safer travel.
"They (the judging committee) look at the engineering of the road, the materials used, and then the overall appearance and safety", Buzzard said.
The total construction cost of the road and bridge was an estimated $2,411,166 and took 305 days to complete. The Cherokee Nation plans to spend close to $100 million on roads in the tribe’s fourteen county jurisdiction area over a span of fifteen years. This road provides access to Indian restricted land, trust land, a state game refuge, mailing route, and a bus route for the Jay public school.
