The basketball team plays in two leagues; they travel to surrounding areas in Oklahoma and Arkansas to play a total of 35 games per season. The funds received from the youth grant helped the team to buy new uniforms and helped with travel expenses. This is the third year the team will receive the grant.
"I appreciate the Cherokee Nation helping with the community youth grant program", said Terry Hooper, Varsity Club coach. "It's a good thing that Cherokee Nation is doing to help local youth."
The basketball team was formed four years ago. Current team players are: Jill Garcia, Marla Christie, Tara Chapman, Lavina Jones, Stephanie Jeffries, Riana McLemore, Christine Hooper, and Marissa Cole.
The Community Youth Grant Program is administered through Cherokee FIRST. The grant requires that the tribal member or group requesting funds should be able to match the grant provided by the Cherokee Nation. Each request has a limit of $200.00 per individual or $500.00 per group. For further information, contact 918-456-0671 (ext.2937).
