TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - Sequoyah High School’s Indian culture club, Honoring Our People’s Existence (HOPE), will hold its 2003 Spring Pow-wow on Saturday, March 1, 2003 at the Sequoyah High School Gym in Tahlequah.Head staff will include Jake Chanate (Kiowa), Don Stroud (Cherokee), Joe Deerinwater (Cherokee), and Nadine Washee (Cheyenne/Arapaho), all of Tahlequah, and Thorpe Sine (Ho-Chunk) of Mounds. The current princess, Vanessa John (Cherokee/Navajo), SHS student, will crown the new princess.
A special girls contest will be held in honor of Emma Julia Washee’s 9th birthday. Emma (Cheyenne/Arapaho and Cherokee) is a student at Greenwood Elementary.
A Gourd Dance will be held from 2-5 p.m., dinner will be served at 5:00 p.m., and intertribal will be from 7-11 p.m. Arts and crafts, raffles, and cakewalks will be part of the entertainment. Everyone is welcome to this free Pow wow.

Sequoyah High School, an Indian boarding school, originated in 1871, when the Cherokee National Council passed an act setting up an orphan asylum to take care of many orphans that came out of the Civil War. Sequoyah High School's approximate 300 enrollment represents 42 tribes and 14 different states. Students are eligible to attend if they are members of federally recognized Indian tribes or one-fourth blood descendants of such members. |
